TIPS FOR BEGINNER MOTORCYCLE RIDERS

Things we wish we knew when we started riding:

Whether you’ve just bought your first motorcycle, are considering learning to ride, or literally just passed your motorcycle license exam, taking the next steps can feel daunting. We have all felt that sense of trepidation, mixed along with all the excitement of a new passion and the uncertainty of not knowing what to do next.

Learning a new skill can be hard. If you don’t have people surrounding you to answer all your questions, including all the questions you’re scared to ask out loud, to whom do you turn to? The good news is that the womxn’s motorcycling community is in general very supportive! We’re here to cheer you on as you step into your new life on two wheels.

🖤

Here are only some of the things many riders wish they knew when they first started riding motorcycles:

1️⃣ It gets easier. If riding motorcycles isn’t something you’ve been doing since a young age, it can feel daunting and just plain difficult. The more time you spend riding, the easier it gets. Just keep practicing.

2️⃣ Start small and gradual. It’s tempting to go for a big, powerful bike right away, but starting with a smaller, more manageable motorcycle can help you build confidence and skills safely. Your learning curve is more manageable and so is the bike.

3️⃣ Riding is a mental game. Riding requires constant focus and mental alertness. It’s not just about handling the bike; you’re always scanning the environment, anticipating moves, and making split-second decisions.

4️⃣ Motorcycling is a very expensive hobby. Expect to spending thousands- not just on your bike, but on proper gear, bike maintenance, registration, and bike upgrades.

5️⃣ Invest in quality gear. Speaking of spending $$$, investing in high-quality, comfortable, and protective gear makes a huge difference in safety and comfort. Thankfully, there are many more options for women in the market now than before, so you can look GOOD while staying protected.

6️⃣ You WILL drop your bike. No matter how careful you are, most riders will drop their bike at some point. It’s a humbling experience, but it’s part of the learning curve—don’t let it discourage you.

7️⃣ Learn basic maintenance early. Knowing how to do basic maintenance like checking tire pressure, oil levels, and chain tension can save you from bigger problems down the road. Plus, it helps you understand your bike better. YouTube is a great resource!

8️⃣ Parking isn’t always easy. Finding a suitable parking spot can be tricky, especially in crowded or uneven areas. Learn how to maneuver your bike in tight spaces and always consider the surface you’re parking on. Practice, practice, practice!

9️⃣ Always expect the unexpected. Cars might cut you off, debris might be on the road, or a sudden change in weather could happen. Always ride defensively and be prepared for the unexpected.

🔟 Take care of your body. Riding can be physically demanding. Strengthen your core, stay hydrated, and take breaks to prevent fatigue and muscle strain.
