Our first and only (currently) branch in Central America, The Litas San José has grown from 2 to almost 100 riders in Costa Rica in the past year. Located in popular vacation destination, the womxn of this collective have built an incredible community of riders from vastly different backgrounds and ages and bikes.

We chatted with babe in paradise and co-founder Kathi about how they got started, what inspires them, and where they think you should go when visiting Costa Rica. Not gonna lie— we were totally ready to catch a flight to San Jose after this interview!

Español: Nuestra primera y única (actualmente) sucursal en América Central, The Litas San José ha crecido de 2 a casi 100 pasajeros en Costa Rica en el último año. Ubicadas en un popular destino de vacaciones, las mujeres de este colectivo han construido una increíble comunidad de ciclistas de muy diferentes orígenes, edades y bicicletas.

Charlamos con algunas de estas chicas en el paraíso sobre cómo comenzaron, qué las inspira y adónde creen que deberías ir cuando visites Costa Rica. No voy a mentir, ¡estábamos totalmente listos para tomar un vuelo a San José después de esta entrevista!

How did you discover The Litas?

Over a year ago, I had the opportunity of representing my country at the Tactical Games, a tournament that took place in Salt lake City, Utah. Taking advantage of this opportunity- and after many years following the Litas- I decided to visit Litas HQ, and explain to Jess why I wanted to open the first chapter in my country.

This initiative allowed other girls in Costa Rica to find their tribe and to always feel welcome and supported regardless of their bike type, lifestyle or preferences. Our riders come from all places and backgrounds. We welcome all bike types and transmissions.

The Litas San José is composed of the girl who uses her small bike to sell mangos in her town park, to the girl who uses her big bikes to compete at national tournaments.

¿Cómo descubriste Las Litas?

Hace más de un año tuve la oportunidad de representar a mi país en los Tactical Games, torneo que se llevó a cabo en Salt Lake City, Utah. Aprovechando esta oportunidad y después de muchos años de seguir a las Litas decidí visitar HQ, y explicarle a Jess por qué quería abrir el primer chapter en mi país.

Esta iniciativa permitió que otras chicas en Costa Rica encontrarán su tribu y se sintieran siempre bienvenidas y apoyadas sin importar su tipo de moto, estilo de vida o preferencias.

Nuestras chicas vienen de todos los lugares y procedencias. Damos la bienvenida a chicas de todos los tipos de bicicletas y transmisiones.

Who are your branch founders?

Ken: @bad_barbie_biker

Kathi is a multidisciplinary athlete who has been riding motorcycles for over 8 years in different categories, such as dual purpose tournaments, cross country and more! She supports our collective with the logistics of our meetups and rides.

Noe is our communications lead who ensures that all girls are connected with our collective vision and mission. She loves to ride in cold weather and foggy mountains.

Have you seen how beautiful the art of our instagram feed looks? That’s thanks to Keni! Since day one, Ken has supported our team with the creation of all visual assets and more! She is a bobber lover and cruises our country on her bike, Atenea.

We additionally receive amazing support from our ride leaders Vale and Nathy, who help us ensure that each of our rides are safe and well-planned.

We have a big group with different types of bikes, so our girls do a tremendous job keeping us all together. No Lita gets left behind thanks to them.

¿Quiénes son tus fundadoras de sucursales?

Kathi es una atleta multidisciplinaria que ha estado en el mundo del motociclismo por más de 8 años y en diferentes categorías como torneos de doble propósito, cross country y mucho más! Ella en nuestro colectivo todo relacionado a logística para nuestros meetups y rodadas.

Noe es nuestra coordinadora de comunicaciones y se asegura que todas las chicas estén conectadas con la visión y misión de nuestro colectivo. Ella disfruta de un paseo en clima frío en una montaña nubosa.

¿Han visto que hermosas artes de nuestro feed? ¡Eso es gracias a Keni! Desde el día uno Ken se ha encargado de la creación de artes visuales para nuestro colectivo.

A ella la verán cruzando nuestro país en su moto Atenea.

Además contamos con el gran apoyo de nuestras líderes de ride: Vale y Nathy que con su increíble apoyo y disponibilidad, nos aseguramos de que cada uno de nuestros viajes sea seguro y planificado.

Somos un grupo grande con diferentes tipos de motos, nuestras chicas hacen un trabajo tremendo manteniéndonos unidas, ninguna Lita se queda atrás gracias a ellas.

What brought the founders together?

This is a beautiful story! Kathi and Noe have been friends since highschool (that’s over 20 years ago) and motorcycles brought us close again, when they founded the Litas branch in San Jose.

Ken was one of the first girls to register in our branch. Since day one, she’s been fully committed to empower other girls through this platform.

Esta es una hermosa historia! Kathi y Noe son amigas desde el cole (eso hace más de 20 años) y las motocicletas las volvió a acercar para juntas fundar la rama de Litas en San José.

Ken fue una de las primeras chicas en unirse a nuestra rama y desde el día uno se comprometió a empoderar a otras chicas por medio de la plataforma.

Tell us about a typical meet up or ride with The Litas San Jose.

We always meet somewhere convenient for all of our girls, usually a petrol station in downtown San José.

From there we’ve been trying to innovate with all type of events

Rides to the mountain or the beach
Meetups just to have dinner and chat
We have built alliances with Honda and gave away scholarships for new girls to learn how to ride
With Triumph, we have done talks about How to improve our riding and do test rides.
Mechanic workshops sponsored by local garages, focusing on topics such as “What to do if your bike breaks and you are on your own?”

As you can see, we are always trying to innovate and plan events that are fun but also helpful to all our riders.

Cuéntenos sobre una reunión típica o un paseo con The Litas San Jose.

Español: Siempre nos reunimos en algún lugar conveniente para todas nuestras chicas, generalmente una gasolinera en el centro de San José.

A partir de ahí hemos ido intentando innovar con todo tipo de eventos:

- Paseos a la montaña o a la playa

- Quedadas para solo ir a cenar y charlar.

- Hemos construido alianzas con motos Honda y regalado becas para que las nuevas niñas puedan aprender a rodar.

- Con Triumph motorcycles hemos realizado charlas sobre Cómo mejorar nuestra conducción y probar nuevas motos.

- Y también talleres mecánicos patrocinados por talleres locales. ¿Qué necesitas saber si tu moto se rompe y estás sola?

Como pueden ver, siempre estamos tratando de innovar, planificar eventos que sean divertidos pero también útiles para todas nuestras niñas.

What is it like living in a vacation destination?

We love our country. It is the perfect destination, as we are one hour away from the beach, 30 minutes away from a rainforest, and 50 minutes away from a volcano!

You have everything in one go! The only thing you need to keep in mind is the drástic weather conditions during the winter season, because it rains a lot.

¿Cómo es vivir en un destino vacacional?

Español: Amamos nuestro país, es el destino perfecto estamos a una hora de la playa, a 30 minutos de una selva tropical, a 50 minutos de un volcán! ¡Tienes todo de una vez! ¡Lo único que debe tener en cuenta son las drásticas condiciones climáticas durante la temporada de invierno! ¡Llueve mucho!
