The Litas Itajaí founded their branch less than a year ago, but have grown quickly by simply inviting womxn to join at every opportunity. Located on the northern central coast of the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, their city is close to popular beaches and tourist attractions, and they aren’t short of great places to ride. With (almost) year-round riding weather, Itajaí is the perfect spot to be a biker.

🇧🇷 : Quem são as fundadoras da sua filial?

Alexandra e Aryelle.

How did you discover the Litas?

There are many moto events in our state and there is always a Lita present, so most of us found out about The Litas by meeting a fellow Lita or through a close friend.

Alexandra: I met Aryelle and Suelen at a birthday party and they both had arrived on their motorcycles. I thought "that's so cool, girls who ride.” I told them that I had a small motorcycle, but I only used to do things around town. My first time riding on an open road was with them, we went to Jaragua do Sul with some Litas, and there they announced the new branch they were opening and that I was chosen as one of the founders.

Aryelle: I was working at my uncle's moto bar and met many riders there. One day this group of cool girls showed up on their motorcycles … Later on I got in contact with one of their founders and she invited me to join their branch. My first ride with them was so cool, we went to the beach to see the full moon rising in the ocean.

Camila: The Litas came out of nowhere in my life. I was hanging at my husband's friend's house and his wife's friends showed up riding motorcycles. They invited me to go on a ride even though I didn't have my motorcycle with me and I felt that I belonged with them right away.

Leticia: I'm the newest member of the group. A friend got invited to join the Litas Itajaí and she invited me to come along. I felt super welcomed right away.

🇧🇷 : Como vocês descobriram sobre The Litas?

Há muitos eventos de moto em nosso estado, e sempre tem uma Lita presente, então a maioria de nós descobriu as The Litas ao conhecer outra Lita ou através de uma amiga próxima.

Alexandra: Conheci a Aryelle e a Suelen em uma festa de aniversário, e ambas foram com suas motos. Eu pensei "isso é tão legal, mulheres que pilotam". Eu disse a elas que tinha uma moto pequena, mas só usava para fazer corres pela cidade. Minha primeira vez pilotando na estrada foi com elas, fomos para Jaraguá do Sul com algumas Litas, e lá foi anunciada a nova filial que estava sendo aberta e que eu fui escolhida como uma das fundadoras. As Litas Itajaí mudaram totalmente minha vida. Me empoderaram como mulher e me trouxeram amizades que eu nunca teria feito por conta própria.

Aryelle: Eu trabalhava no bar de motos do meu tio e conhecia muitos motociclistas lá. Um dia, um grupo de garotas apareceu lá com suas motos... Mais tarde, entrei em contato com uma de suas fundadoras, e ela me convidou para me juntar à elas. Meu primeiro passeio com elas foi incrível, fomos à praia para ver a lua cheia nascendo.

Camila: As Litas surgiram do nada na minha vida. Eu estava na casa de um amigo do meu marido, e as amigas da esposa dele apareceram pilotando motos. Elas me convidaram para um passeio, mesmo a minha moto não estando comigo. Eu me identifiquei imediatamente e senti que pertencia a aquele grupo.

Leticia: Sou a membro mais recente do grupo. Uma amiga foi convidada a se juntar às Litas de Itajaí e me convidou para ir junto. Me senti super acolhida imediatamente.

What brought the founders together?

First of all, friendship.

Two of our primary founders were already Litas from other existing branches. They decided to start a new branch to be able to reach more women from the smaller cities around that didn't have a The Litas branch.

Alexandra was chosen as the third founder mainly as an encouragement to her and many other new riders. Even though she didn't have much experience riding a motorcycle on her own, she is a sweet and kind woman - and our greatest example of “you can do it too"!

🇧🇷 : O que uniu as fundadoras?

Primeiramente, amizade.

Duas de nossas fundadoras já eram Litas de outras filiais existentes. Elas decidiram começar uma nova filial para alcançar mais mulheres das cidades menores ao redor de Itajaí, e que não tinham uma filial das Litas.

A Alexandra foi escolhida como terceira fundadora principalmente como um incentivo a ela e a muitas outras novas motociclistas. Mesmo não tendo muita experiência em pilotar uma moto sozinha, ela é uma mulher doce e gentil - e nosso maior exemplo de "você também pode fazer isso"!

What has been your greatest success as a branch?

All of us feel that we already achieved so much as a collective, and that is our greatest success.

Even though our branch is still a baby, we feel that we overcame many barriers. Itajaí's branch came as an offshoot of the nearby Balneário Camboriú's branch, so that was a challenge of itself: making sure that everybody understood the intentions behind opening a new branch without anybody feeling left behind.

It worked out. Some girls came along to Itajaí and others decided to stay in Balneário, so both branches coexist just fine. We got to celebrate Balneario's 6th anniversary with them, and it was such a fun day together.

Besides that, so many things have happened and changed in such a short period of time, but as a collective and as friends we grew stronger while facing challenges.

🇧🇷 : Qual foi o maior sucesso de sua filial?

Todas nós sentimos que já alcançamos tanto como coletivo e esse é o nosso maior sucesso.

Mesmo sendo uma filial recente, sentimos que já superamos muitas barreiras. A filial de Itajaí surgiu como uma ramificação da filial de Balneário Camboriú, então isso já foi um desafio por si só: garantir que todos entendessem as intenções por trás da abertura de uma nova filial sem que ninguém se sentisse deixado para trás.

Funcionou. Algumas mulheres se juntaram a Itajaí e outras decidiram ficar em Balneário, então ambas as filiais coexistem muito bem. Conseguimos comemorar juntas o 6º aniversário de Balneário, e foi um dia bem divertido.

Além disso, tantas coisas aconteceram e mudaram em um curto período de tempo, mas como coletivo e como amigas, ficamos mais fortes enfrentando desafios.

What are some challenges you face living and riding in Itajaí?

It is a great city to live in. But because it is near many tourist beach cities, during summer time traffic gets heavier. We live in a coastal city, and sometimes it rains a lot around here. But we are super grateful that we don't have to deal with snow and can ride year-round.

🇧🇷 : Quais são alguns desafios que vocês enfrentam morando e pilotando em Itajaí?

É uma ótima cidade para se viver, e, por estar perto de muitas cidades turísticas na praia, o trânsito fica mais intenso durante o verão. Vivemos em uma cidade litorânea, e às vezes chove bastante por aqui. Mas somos muito gratas por não precisarmos lidar com neve e conseguirmos pilotar o ano todo.

Serra do Rio do Rastro is one of the most famous roads that riders from Brazil and other countries go to explore when they come to our state. There you can ride along canyons surrounded by the rainforest. The road has 284 curves, and it was considered one of the top 10 most breathtaking winding roads in the world. It's an epic landscape only 4 hours away from here.
