If you have been fortunate enough to converse with Gevin Fax (a.k.a. @sapasioux), you know that this O.G. moto warrior has a wealth of knowledge and wisdom to share. Gevin has been attending The Sturgis Rally (@sturgisrally) since 1990, which was the 50th anniversary of the world's largest motorcycle rally.

For thousands of years, the Native Americans have used ceremonies to encounter the spirit world, and the Hanbleceya (pronounced han-bi-lech-ia) is such a ceremony.

Gevin’s journeys to Sturgis have been her Hanbleceya, or vision quest, trekking 2000 miles (one way) on back roads from California to South Dakota.

The first time she attended the rally in 1990, she went with 2 girlfriends; but most years after that, she would fly solo. She found that the need to complete a solo trip to Sturgis had become such a driving force within her that she could not ignore it. It was and is her personal vision quest. Admittedly scared of the daunting task of traveling so many miles on lonely roads with no one but herself to get through any mishaps, Gevin considers her first solo trip as one of the best road trips of her life.

There are many unknowns when you attempt such a feat on your own, so many “what if’s” plaguing your thoughts - but she fought those fears and powered through it. Over 30 years of riding the long way ‘round to Sturgis has taught her a thing or two about self-reliance, self-empowerment, and self-worth.

Despite what one might think about this massive biker rally in South Dakota, for Gevin, the rally is like going home. She enjoys the parties, oftens performs with bands and is known to all the regulars and locals; but she primarily spends her time on the outskirts, taking in the beauty of the hills and going to “sweat” (sweat lodges), & to pow wow and connect with her adopted Lakota family. If you have never been to that area of South Dakota, the ride through the Black Hills and the Badlands and the surrounding beauty are 100% worth the effort.

It’s a biker's life for me.”

Gevin’s first years of riding to the rally were on an “old clunker” Shovelhead, but this year she will be rolling through on this brand new Indian Chieftain Darkhorse.

This year, The Sturgis Rally is taking place August 6th through 15th. Have you ever been? Or have you want to go? Comment below if you plan on attending this year, and don’t forget to look out for the O.G. Moto Warrior, Gevin Fax.
